Harold is the Chairman and Co-Founder of the Public Library of Science, a non-profit publisher of open access journals committed to making scientific and medical research literature a freely accessible public resource. This announcement is also posted on the Public Library of Science website. – Ed.]

The successful development of open access publishing by organizations including the Public Library of Science (PLoS) in recent years is a dramatic illustration of how the Internet is revolutionizing scientific communication. Today, after several months of work, I’m delighted to announce that PLoS is launching PLoS Currents (Beta) — a new and experimental website for the rapid communication of research results and ideas. In response to the recent worldwide H1N1 influenza outbreak, the first PLoS Currents research theme is influenza.

PLoS Currents: Influenza, which we are launching today, is built on three key components: a small expert research community that PLoS is working with to run the website; Google Knol with new features that allow content to be gathered together in collections after being vetted by expert moderators; and a new, independent database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) called Rapid Research Notes, where research targeted for rapid communication, such as the content in PLoS Currents: Influenza will be freely and permanently accessible. To ensure that researchers are properly credited for their work, PLoS Currents content will also be given a unique identifier by the NCBI so that it is citable.

PLoS Currents: Influenza welcomes contributions covering any and all aspects of research into influenza: influenza virology, genetics, immunity, structural biology, genomics, epidemiology, modeling, evolution, policy and control. Contributions might take the form of new datasets, preliminary analyses or entire manuscripts. The launch site already features new findings from some outstanding influenza researchers.

To enable contributions to PLoS Currents: Influenza to be shared as rapidly as possible, they will not be subject to in-depth peer review; however, unsuitable submissions will be screened out by a board of expert moderators led by Eddie Holmes (Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, Pennsylvania State University) and Peter Palese (Department of Microbiology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine).

The key goal of PLoS Currents is to accelerate scientific discovery by allowing researchers to share their latest findings and ideas immediately with the world’s scientific and medical communities. Google Knol’s features for community interaction, comment and discussion will enable commentary and conversations to develop around these findings. Given that the contributions to PLoS Currents are not peer-reviewed in detail, however, the results and conclusions must be regarded as preliminary. In time, it is therefore likely that PLoS Currents contributors will submit their work for publication in a formal journal, and the PLoS Journals will welcome these submissions.

PLoS Currents: Influenza is an experiment and a prototype for further PLoS Currents sites. It reflects our commitment to using online tools to the fullest extent possible for the open sharing of research results. As with any new project, we will be listening carefully to the reactions within and beyond the scientific and medical communities and welcoming suggestions for improvements.

AMEX - Credit Card Fraud Alert

Now being one of the recent victims of American Express credit card Fraud alert and happen to see someone stealing my credit card details, I wanted to write a post that helps others in what it takes to fight against it.

To start with, AMEX cancelled my credit card and the 'security team' at the customer service did not give more details than the following

Armed with the above information, it looks like it is the credit card holder responsibility to hire a person to find the culprit(that is the response from AMEX).
One would imagine, there are tougher laws against this kind of crime and credit card companies would be on top of it to avoid this in future, apparently it is not so.

Getting of the phone with AMEX, i wanted to check online what are all the options.
FBI has extensive information on this issue.

ehow has an excellent article on how to report credit card fraud.

The next step is to call American Express again and identify the source of the transaction, possibly call Buy.com and ask for more details. Not sure where the credit card details where exposed, but this is a good start to see who did it and report on it.

Information is not safe online when it is on the wrong hands, the moral of the story!

2009 SQL Experience - BI Project @ Indianapolis

Glad i went to the SQL BI meet, here in this post I would like to give a quick review on how the day went!

Five Sessions:

1) "Gathering Requirements" by Perpetual Technologies Manager on "Requirements Discovery and Design".

2) Building database model by Ray Lucas from Perpetual Technologies (excellent presentation) on How to get the Conceptual, Logical & Physical model right in first place.How to build a data warehouse (Inmon and Kimball techniques), explanation on Cubes and Dimensions, etc. Also he did a quick demo walkthrough on how to build 'Invest In Me' application by applying the models to build a data model.

3) ETL by Arie Jones, mostly covering the SQL Server Integration Services and some tips and tricks. Showed demo of some of the common techniques to do ETL in the 'Invest in Me' application.

4) Juan did a presentation on SSAS, some of the concepts like UDM, MDX, Tuples, Measures, Cubes, Dimensions and Attribute relationship (Speaker insisted the concept of establishing this as a must for SQL Server Analysis Services) was explained in-depth. But he did not have time to complete the whole presentation! It looks like there is a lot to learn in the SSAS space.

5) SSRS presentation by Arie Jones. Explained the tips and tricks to do Dashboard and some neat little tricks to use web services to do custom implementation of reports.Showed how to do some cool charting using new SSRS 2008 Gauge controls. If you are using SSRS 2005 then you are better of to buy the Dundas controls and use it.

The food was excellent, sponsors did keep the participants engaged by giving away prizes lot of SQL books and T-Shirts.

Thanks to Perptech for giving an opportunity to learn some good SQL stuff.

4 & 5) Alan stevens one of the great presenter i have come across in the recent past. Excellent presentation skills! He explained ASP.NET MVC real well! His introduction to test driven development and the intermediate level talk on the TDD, well done Alan!

What is in for IE, here we go,

In IE go to Add Favorites and create a new favorite called 'some usefulname for Ajax generated html' and then in the properties of the favorites in place of URL cut & paste the following code,

Microsoft has done a real good job. It took almost an year for me to get updated to the latest operation system at home.

So much pain to get the Vista drivers still! Google the saver of life helped..

After so much research for almost a week, i ended up doing the 'clean install' option.

It is smooth as pie, to get to the new O/S installed. But to get the machine back to normalcy.. wow how much googling we have to do!

Wonderful lessons learned:

1) If you have multiple graphics card, Vista picks the one and stays with it. In order to switch to the graphics card of your needs, you need to go through all means in life!

2) Microphone doesnt work in one shot. Realtek AC 97 drivers need to be installed, uninstalled, reinstalled all the heck!

3) Vista creates 'Windows.old' for moving for the previous operating system (Win XP proffesional).The folder is just the old files and can be deleted!

4) Vista is fast than XP Professional!

Very nice, here is the interesting way to do it from the article..

how you do that:
Make your html page A served from one.foo.com lower its document.domain to foo.com
Place an html page B on two.foo.com, and have it lower its document.domain to foo.com early in its load cycle. (A JavaScript statement in global scope in the 'head' section is fine).
Implement a function GetData(callback) on this page that constructs an XHR request to load the desired data from two.foo.com. Wire up the XHR onReadyStateChanged to process the data completion using a function implemented in B.html, and in that function pass the received data to the callback function passed into GetData().
Insert an invisible (1x1 pixel) iframe on page A and set its src to http://two.foo.com/B.html
After page A has fully loaded, and page B in the iframe has loaded, JavaScript code in page A can call the GetData() function in page B through the iframe element: bframe.window.GetData(mycallback)
Believe it or not, this works. Domain lowering allows JavaScript to call between A and B, and the fact that B is served from two.foo.com allows the XHR request implemented in B to access two.foo.com.

I gave it a try to get the Google AJAX Feeds to make a Feed BillBoard.

Four Simple Steps: (This article assumes you know HTML, Javascript and CSS)

1) Generate AJAX Feed API Key, add the script reference to Google API with your key Tip: It works without key too!

2) Add the following code:

If you are like me and want to know what the product look like, try to hit

Why does some alternate address comes as the first thing, when you map search for businesses 'Google' in Palo Alto,CA (see the image attached)?

The reason why Google dint come as the first address (my guess),Meta tags based search, Ranking thing! Also check out the other listing in the businesses?!

Having it at the end of the page :(, I have been using Google for the last 5 years aggressively and never found this thing existing!

Taking the users input is definitely a great approach. But keeping it visible is more important to improve the search results.

I was reading,
Google Continues Search Engine Dominance - Even In Verticals! a nice article from Richard MacManus (founder of Read/Write web).

Blogging about Google is 'hot' right now and any number of hits/diggs to the blogs is based on the true fact, how Google ranks you! I love Google and i take this oppurtunity to blog about it.

Google is supposed to be really 'smart' in search!
Doing a trial search of 'Search' and hit 'I'm feeling lucky', ahh ha i was taken to Live !

Here is the 'Search' result for the word Search in Google.(If you are at Google dot com you know what is 'Search', but what if i want to know which search is the best..)

Try it for yourself. Just wondering, SEO is that the way the result is supposed to show?

Billions of searches made with Google every month with so many questions? How does google take the feedback of incorrect results? Will it be good if we can do rating like Digg on the search results of Google and add the power of Wikipedia to it.

What if we had Google, Yahoo, MSN & all other vertical search engines combined to offer 'one search'! That is web3.0 in search :-).

P.S: I did one another dumb search, try 'Google' and hit I'm feeling lucky OR just nothing and hit search.. Server Round trip!

Update: Google is listening, some one in california and seattle watching my blog. Here it is..It wasn't fixed until yesterday, Google fixed the issue in 48 hours..! Nice work..

KML - Keyhole Markup Language

What is KML anyway?

Stores geographic modeling information in XML format; includes points, lines, polygons, and images; used to identify and label locations, create different camera angles, overlay textures, and add HTML content (as per fileinfo.net).

As google provides option for exporting the 'My Maps' to KML, i tried to get an idea of what it is.
